Our district adopted Go Math! as our mathematics curriculum. Go Math! will be completed in the classroom with daily lessons. Short assessments in the middle of the chapter and chapter tests will be completed to check your child’s understanding of the concepts. Go Math! has online access so you can work on skills at home. We also work on math fact fluency daily using Rocket Math.
Classroom Workbooks
Each student is given a workbook that we use in class. The workbook has a variety of different activities that include games, vocabulary cards, practice pages, and review skills. At times, you will see these pages come home in the student folders so that you can see what we are working on in class, but most of the time we will keep the pages at school so that we can refer back to them as needed.
Online Videos/Teacher Tools
Most of the lessons come with online videos that utilize puppets and other familiar characters to model how to solve a specific math problem. The videos are generally about 5 minutes long, or less, so they are great at keeping the student's attention while teaching them strategies to problem solve. I also have an online version of the workbook that I use in class to model for the students how we are filling out the various answers, and demonstrating strategies to solve problems.
Assessments
Mid-Chapter Checkpoint
Within each chapter there will be a mid-chapter checkpoint. We will be using this as a formative assessment that will go in the grade book. The purpose of the mid-chapter check is to ensure that all students are ready to move on to the final portions of the chapter. If not, this gives me an opportunity to go back and reteach any skills that are needed, either as a whole group, small group, or individually.
End of the Chapter Test
These will be copied pages that will go home once they have been graded. During tests I read the directions for every problem and then the students are asked to answer them independently. The papers are collected once the test is over, and you will also find the grade for these written at the top of the page.
Online Tools
Go Math! also has many online tools to help you stay connected at home. You can access their site and play games, as well as find practice problems.
